Every year, approximately 700 million ink and toner cartridges are used in the United States. A little more than half, roughly 375 million end up in landfills or incinerators because they aren't returned for recycling.

375 million cartridges per year equate to the disposal of:

  • 1,000,000 cartridges per day
  • 11 cartridges per second

375 million cartridges put end-to-end would circle the earth over three times.

Additionally, laser toner cartridge that is thrown away adds approximately four pounds of plastic, metal and chemicals to a landfill. As if that wasn't bad enough, the plastics used in printer cartridges are made of an engineering grade polymer that has a very slow decomposition rate – ranging between 450 to 1,000 years, depending on the cartridge type.

While inkjet cartridges are smaller, they still take up space in landfills and also pose a threat to the environment because they may leak printer ink.
